Exercise is very vital in everyone’s life. We all need to get the right amount of daily exercise to keep our body fit and healthy. Unfortunately, the desire, drive, and motivation to get ample exercise dwindle as people get older. We loose the yearning to go to the gym or lift those dumbbells because we are not as physically tough as before. How can people in their 40’s, especially parents, motivate themselves to get back on the exercise track again?

Benefits Of Exercising In Your 40s

Getting enough exercises in your 40s increases the chances of you ageing gracefully. You will be able to maintain a toned and lean body that is fit and active too. You will be able to avoid contracting illnesses like arthritis, diabetes, and even depression. You’ll be able to handle seemingly difficult activities and tasks with ease. In effect, you will be able to lead a full life and enjoy each moment that comes your way.

So what are some exercises that are recommendable for men and women, especially for moms and dads out there? Here are some you may want to take note of for yourself or for someone you know:

Strength training exercises.

This promotes lean muscles and helps increase metabolic rate. An increase in metabolic rate can help you in maintaining the ideal body weight. This is another concern for people over 40. There is the tendency to gain weight during these years because overall activity is decreased. Thus you need to do some strength training exercises as soon as you can.

Cardiovascular exercises.

Mounting on your bike once more and going for a few rounds in your neighborhood everyday can get you just about the right amount of cardiovascular workout you need for your ageing body. It strengthens your bones and tones your body as well.

Swimming and other water exercises.

If you feel like going for a dip in the pool, go ahead and jump in. Go for a few laps or maybe around 15-25 minutes of swimming and other exercises like water aerobics. This method will not only keep you healthy but will help you get refreshed as well.

Ball games.

Engaging in different sports and ball games like volleyball can help your body stay in shape. Find a type of sports you like and look for a buddy or partner who can join you in your workouts. This way, you’ll find it easy to stick to your exercise plan.

Jogging and walking.

Getting up and going for a jog or a brisk walk around the neighborhood can get those muscles working and blood pumping hard once again. Devote around 30 minutes of walk time everyday. That should be enough to keep you energized.

Before you engage in any kind of exercise, remember to consult your doctor first. Find out which kinds of exercises fit you and get ample amounts of it daily. If you stick to this exercise plan, your body will soon respond and you’ll end up being more fit than ever. Sounds like a great over-40 coping plan? If you think so, then go ahead and get right on it!

Whatever your age is, any amount of exercise should be good for you. In fact, the National Academy of Sciences recommends that we should be doing at least an hour of physical activity everyday. However, this does not mean that you have to spend this in the gym and work on all their complicated equipments. You can break this down into shorter intervals with activities that you do everyday such as walking, gardening, and even house cleaning.

Aside from aiding with weight loss and giving you a thinner and toned body, exercising has so much more to offer as far as our health is concerned. Exercise can help prevent and even improve a good number of potentially harmful health conditions.

Heart Disease

Subjecting yourself to regular physical activities will strengthen your heart muscle, lower your blood pressure, enhance blood flow in the body, lower high-density cholesterols, and increase low-density cholesterols. With such helpful benefits, your risk at having heart diseases, stroke, and high blood pressure dramatically decreases.

Any amount and kind of physical activity is already better than none, although more is better, says The New England Journal of Medicine. A study that was conducted at Duke University has led the researches to conclude that the best way to improve body lipids or cholesterol levels in the body is by focusing on the amount of exercise that you subject your body it, rather the on its intensity.

Stroke

Looking at 23 studies, the researches have come to conclude that being active is a big help in reducing your risk at ever acquiring and drying from a stroke. In fact, a study has been conducted among participants that are moderately active on their risks at having stroke. It was found out, as published by the journal Stroke, that these participants have 20 percent less risk of stroke as compared to those that are less active.

Type II Diabetes

With today’s food industry and sedentary lifestyles, diabetes is one of those health conditions that are increasing at a very alarming rate. Exercising and losing weight is the number one way in order to fight this disease. Losing weight increases insulin sensitivity, reduces blood pressure, and improves the body’s sugar and cholesterol levels.

A research that was conducted by Frank Hu, MD of the Harvard School of Public Health has found out that brink walking is a big help in controlling diabetes. Published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the study showed that who walk at least an hour every day could reduce their chances at acquiring this condition by 34 percent.

Obesity

Along with a healthy, overweight and obesity conditions can be prevented or even treated with physical activity. With exercise, your body fat is reduced and muscle mass is increased. As a result, your body will have less difficulty burning off those calories. Activity will lead to a lower body mass index which contributes in leading a healthier life.

Back Pain

Most of the time, back pain can be a product of the back muscle problems. By getting into a fitness program that focuses on muscle strengthening and flexibility, back pain can be managed and prevented. Having a strong abdomen and practicing good posture is a very good defense against back pain.

Osteoporosis

Weight-bearing exercises such as walking, dancing, and lifting weights help in strengthening bone formation. This prevents osteoporosis and bone loss which is very common among women after menopause. For optimal results, combine this with a diet that is rich in calcium and vitamin D.

The Journal of the American Medical Association has reported that women who walk at least four hours in a week had 41 percent fewer hip fractures as compared to those that perform walking exercises less then an hour a week.

In this day and age when people live in a fast-paced world, keeping up with one’s health has become a challenging task. Due to their hectic schedule, many people feel too tired to go to the gym or spend a few minutes exercising. The truth of the matter is that living healthy can have various benefits for your body. Exercising can make your body balance so you can feel healthy all the time.

It is important to keep yourself healthy as it will ensure that your body is in harmony and working in optimum health. When your body is not in balance, you become prone to illnesses and diseases. Eating the right kind of food, having plenty of exercise, and maintaining a positive attitude all contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

According to the American Heart Association, you need to exercise at least 30 minutes three times a week. But you should refrain from smoking, taking illegal drugs, or abusing alcohol. Find an interesting but enjoyable hobby and always be on the positive side. You may find yourself faltering at times but make sure that you get up and recover. Living a sedentary life can make you prone to diseases and other bodily disorders.

So how do you stay healthy? Getting enough rest can repair and restore your muscles as well as rejuvenate your body. The right amount of sleep can boost creativity, enhance your mood, and lessen the possibility of obesity. Seven hours of uninterrupted sleep is recommended for optimum health.

Consider taking a natural diet. Add organic fruits, vegetables, or berries to your diet. They are more nutritious, pesticide-free, and tastes better than conventional food. Avoid artificial sweeteners because they can have diverse effects on your health. An example of these substances is aspartame, which is associated to tumors, seizures, headaches, altered brain functions, and other diseases.

Being healthy entails making crucial changes in your lifestyle. The important thing is to never give up on losing weight and being healthy. If others can do it, why not you?

We often hear about carb reduction and many people think they should reduce eating foods containing them. However, this is not true because the carbs we eat with vegetables and green are useful and help the body remain slim.

There are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex. When you eat fruit, you consume simple cabs which get into the blood quickly and cause weight problems. Complex carbs are found in vegetables. They are digested much slower, and thus, the intake decreases significantly.

Also, complex carbs include more vitamins and minerals than simple ones. Doctors recommend eating whole vegetables and grains and avoid juices usually rich of simple carbohydrates. Vegetables rich of useful carbs include sweet potatoes, peas, pumpkin, radishes and others. You should eat them every day. By doing this you avoid associated problems which tend to accumulate and appear when you do not expect them.

If fresh fruit and vegetables are a problem, you may eat frozen and canned food. However, do not drink the juice because it concentrates simple sugars which add to health problems. As rule of thumb, eat a piece of fruit every breakfast, dinner and supper. The habit will also detoxify the body and make you feel more active.

If you dislike fruit, salads are easy to prepare and full of vitamins and minerals. They are especially good in spring when the organism lacks vital nutrients and many suffer from avitaminosis.

Fruit and vegetables are rich of antioxidants. They eliminate toxins and other harmful substances reducing the risk of developing cancer. They are extremely necessary for ill and aged people whose immune system is weak.

An average American and European resident usually gets only half of the amount of vitamins and minerals necessary for keeping strong health. If you are a bust person and can not eat regularly, they recommend buying and taking vitamins and minerals in pills. They are very necessary in winter and spring when the body is weaker.

However, supermarkets offer new ready breakfasts and dinners every day. And only a conscious consumer will take the time and visit fruit and vegetable sections. Also, consider buying ready salads which often list ingredients, quantity, calories and other useful information.

Overall, the problem of good and bad carbs is in eating habits. Parents often impose their habits on their children whose organisms can not resist possible damage. The solutions are obvious and they are regular eating fresh fruit and vegetables or taking multivitamins and minerals.

There are many carb blockers in stores and online, however it is better read more before buying. Read a piece of reviews on Meratol and make a wise choice.

If you’re looking to lose weight in a healthy and exciting way then why not consider a sports holiday to Majorca, in Spain? Known as the home of cycling, attracting world class road cyclists and plenty of mountain biking enthusiasts, it’s also perfect for a whole host of other healthy activities to make the pounds drop off. Here are some ideas to really shake up your fitness in 2012:

Tennis– it’s definitely a big sport in Majorca, thanks to two locals becoming professional players: Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya. You’ll find courts scattered across the island and the Mediterranean weather means that it’s comfortable to play for most of the year. Many hotels have their own courts, but the Illot Suites and Spa in Cala Ratjada goes one step further by offering coaching sessions to its guests. Tennis works the whole body and it is a high impact activity for shifting weight.

Hiking and Nordic Walking– Majorca is perfect for both of these activities as the terrain is varied to keep you on your toes. The Tramuntana Mountains in the north of the island have plenty of hiking routes, such as the GR221, which winds its way through rural villages and towns. You can download Nordic Walking trail maps from the Balearic Tourist Board, which focus on the Alcudia peninsula area, or you might want to stay at a hotel with its own Nordic Walking track, such as Sa Franquesa Nova in rural Majorca, which is ideal for sports lovers.

Diving– the south west area of Majorca is very popular with divers due to its interesting marine life and offshore wrecks. Whether you’re an experienced diver or you’ve never tried it, there are specialist organisations registered with the Association of Majorca’s Dive Centres that can help you to get underwater and provide the correct kit.

Windsurfing– a perfect activity for groups or individuals, windsurfing is challenging but can be a fun way to exercise, and it particularly tones up your arms. The water temperature in Majorca is comfortable enough to do this from spring to autumn and you’ll find that most large beaches including Pollensa and Palma Nova offer windsurfing equipment for hire, with some giving you the option of tuition so you can really sharpen your skills on the water.

As you can see, Majorca is perfect for helping you to lose weight without extreme dieting. You can enjoy yourself on holiday at the same time, and maybe treat yourself to a massage or a spa at one of the many wellness centres on the island for all your hard work. Go on – you’re worth it.

These essentials will help you look – and, crucially, feel – like a serious runner

There are exciting new innovations in running kit every season it seems, and it’s easy to be seduced by hot trends. But the only essentials’ you really need to buy are good trainers, a sports bra and socks made specifically for running; everything else is down to personal taste and your budget.

Shoes

Your shoes should always be your first consideration. Don’t second-guess your gait; go to a specialist running store, particularly if you’ve never been fitted before. If you’re a keen runner or in training for an event that requires daily runs, it may be worth your while buying two pairs so you can alternate them, to give the padding time to recover.

The ‘barefoot’ running movement has been gathering pace recently, but you should only try it if you’re an experienced runner and have access to safe routes.

Run-Specific Leggings, Shorts Or Capri Pants

Fitted bottoms are designed to prevent water-logging, chafing and tripping, and will make running much more comfortable. Most have hidden pockets (normally just below the small of your back) and they may also have reflective panels. Go for thicker, matt fabrics for winter runs.

Socks

We know what you’re thinking. Socks aren’t the sexiest part of your kit, but they perform a vital role, providing cushioned support exactly where you need it and wicking (carrying and locking away) sweat to prevent blisters. Look for high-tech fabrics such as COOLMAX and go for double-layered designs to prevent friction. Once you’ve found your perfect match, buy a few pairs because they wear out faster than you think!

Wicking Top

We don’t want to be dictatorial; when it comes to running, you can wear what you want – to a certain extent. However, wicking, breathable fabrics are among the greatest innovations for runners and are an essential investment. Unlike cotton, they don’t get heavy when you sweat and dry super-fast, so they keep you looking and smelling fresh. Added extras, such as fabrics with antibacterial or SPF sun-protective properties, are also worth considering.

Windproof Jacket

A lightweight jacket will provide an extra layer you can whip off at a moment’s notice (a great idea in winter). Choose one with secret pockets, so you can carry essentials such as your keys or phone. It’s also a good idea to go for one with high-visibility reflective panels, for running in the dark. However, be aware there’s a difference between ‘showerproof’, which will only provide a barrier against light rain, and completely ‘waterproof’.

Bra

Everyone’s breasts jiggle when they run, even small ones: a 2009 study on breast movement at Portsmouth University revealed some breasts move up to eight inches during a run, which is not only uncomfortable but can cause sagging in the connective tissue of the breast, otherwise known as Cooper’s ligaments. For support, comfort and confidence, a well-fitting sports bra is a must. It might be an idea to get professionally fitted, but in general, look for a fit that’s snug but not so tight it restricts your breathing. The straps shouldn’t dig into your shoulders and look for seamless or flat-seam designs to prevent chafing. How long your bra lasts depends on how often you use it but the general recommendation is that you replace it every six months.

When you lead a busy and hectic life, daily exercise can seem like mission impossible, but it doesn’t have to be! Despite juggling working part time and being enrolled in a full time law school program, I still manage to fit in plenty of exercise each day. It isn’t easy and at times it can be positively exhausting, but I know that I am doing my body and health a world of good by keeping up my daily regime.

Based on my own experiences, here are 5 ways you can fit exercise into a jam-packed schedule:

Workout at Your Desk

This may sound a little silly, but you can actually get in a decent workout right at your desk. I keep a pair of 3 lb dumbbell weights in a drawer at my desk so that when I have a lengthy phone call I can do several reps. In addition, I also have a yoga ball that I try and sit on for two-three hours a day as opposed to my usual desk chair. Yoga balls can help align your posture correctly and also help strengthen your core abs muscles. I have definitely seen an improvement in my abs since using one of these!

Take the Stairs

Whenever there is a stair option, take it. Whether this is to and from your car to the office or to your apartment on the fifth floor, always try and take the stairs as opposed to the elevator. If you take several flights of stairs a day, you will be amazed how much of a difference this can make to your life. You can even up the intensity by taking two stairs at a time or jogging as opposed to walking up them.

Utilize Your Lunch Hour

There’s a great park nearby the office where I work part time, and during my lunch hour I like to walk over and eat my lunch. It’s a ten minute walk each way, so I know I am getting a mini aerobic workout just be going there. Sometimes I even bring a mat and do some floor exercises. Even if you don’t live near a park, there is still probably somewhere you could walk to during your lunch hour. Try walking to the local café or supermarket, the gained exercise can still really benefit your fitness levels.

Break it Up

Instead of vowing to do an hour of nonstop exercise a day, breaking up your self-assigned block of exercise can make it a little easier. I try and do ten minutes of toning exercises when I get up, ten minutes of strengthening exercise in the evening and then fit in the rest of the hour throughout the middle of the day. This can make exercise seem like less of a chore as well as less boring.

Make Exercise a Priority

Many people complain that they don’t have time for exercise, but often they simply haven’t made it enough of a priority in their daily routine. If you make it a top priority on your agenda, you will likely be surprised at how simply exercise can be worked into your schedule. Keep your end fitness goal and look constantly in mind, and you should be able to keep exercise a top priority in your life.

Hopefully these tips will have inspired you to leave your excuses as the door and place fitness at the top of your agenda. Putting exercise higher up on your to-do list can dramatically improve how you look and feel. Good luck!

There is a scary myth that is circulating around the internet and on several medical blogs and websites that people with diabetes should avoid vigorous workouts. We were extremely alarmed when we saw this posted in the comments and forums of reputable websites. The truth is that patients with diabetes can participate in vigorous workouts, just like patients without diabetes. They do need to take extra precautions to ensure they safely do so without developing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels).

Due to the underlying medical conditions that accompany diabetes, it’s important to talk with your doctor to make sure you are healthy enough to push your body to the limits. You might need to start slowly and work your way to a more aggressive workout. Your doctor will also help you determine a range at which your blood sugar levels should be at prior to working out and after your workout. They might also have you meet with a dietitian to make diet changes to help promote weight loss and/or muscle growth, such as increasing your protein intake. In addition to meeting with your doctor, we have a few other tips we can provide:

Drink plenty of fluids- Everyone needs to make sure they drink enough fluid to stay hydrated, but managing blood sugar levels can become more difficult when one is dehydrated. For patients with diabetes, it’s vitally important to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout to minimize any swings in blood sugar levels.

Wear proper shoes and socks- While everyone needs proper footwear when working out, it’s extremely important for patients with diabetes to do so. Neuropathy can occur in patients with diabetes, so it’s important that your shoes fit properly. It’s also important to wear diabetic socks that help prevent blisters from forming and doesn’t constrict blood flow to your feet.

Be cautious of the temperature- The temperature of your workout facility can affect how your body absorbs insulin. For this reason, it’s important to take not of the temperature around you when working out. On hotter days, you need to be extra concerned with dehydration, so drink plenty of extra fluids.

Carry a snack- In case you develop hypoglycemia; carry a snack to bring your blood sugar levels back to the normal range. Although you might not need it, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Hypoglycemia is a risk that patients with diabetes need to be aware of when working out. However, the benefits far outweigh the risks. If you feel your blood sugar levels might be dropping, stop your workout immediately and test your blood sugar levels. Do not resume your exercise program until its back within the normal range. Your safety must be your number one priority! We hope this helps you reach your fitness goals safely.

Bio: Adam helps promote the truth behind diabetes as part of his company’s efforts to de-bunk common diabetes myths. He also helps runners find the best thermal socks for the bitter cold winter months.

There’s the so called, “caveman diet”, which dictates if you can’t unearth it, pluck it, pick it, or shoot it, it’s probably not meant to be food.
There’s the Adkins diet and the South Beach diet, which warn us away from carbs. There’s the vegan diet, which warns us away from meats and dairy.
There’s the Scarsdale diet – does anyone still follow that one? There’s Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, and it’s enough to make a girl want to eat a donut, or twelve, from all the stress.
There’s also the basic principle that if you eat just a little bit less, and exercise just a little bit more, you will lose weight. Period.
However, if it were that easy to employ such a principle, none of us would be struggling with our weight. It’s hard to prioritize 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a day, when we are sitting at our desk jobs, raising children, and following the evening performances on American Idol as our small reward. It’s also hard to eat just a little bit less, when every day there is a little bit more junk food thrown in our faces by the companies that make the most money on the most delicious combinations of sugar and salt. How many more flavors of M&Ms and Doritos can possibly be invented, and why do we feel powerless not to try them all?
We call it a lack of will power, but there are a number of contributors to why we indulge and overindulge. One of the ways we can fight back is through acupuncture.
Stress-eating, triggered by anxiety and frustration, can be lessened through acupuncture. Acupuncture helps the body release endorphins that bring about a sense of calm. A calm eater is a smart, thoughtful eater, who can make healthy choices about foods.
There are also specific acupuncture points that are helpful for weight loss success. The mouth, as it may seem obvious, can be treated for eating impulsively. The stomach is the culprit for the nibbler, who eats when she’s not hungry. The lungs are specified for food addicts and people with a sweet tooth. The endocrines are targeted when weight is due to water retention, and the adrenal glands and ovaries are treated when obesity is the result of menstrual cycle changes. Treating the spleen helps with glucose in the blood, and treating the thyroid helps with slow metabolism.
Of course, the acupuncture points for these areas may not even be close to the location of the organs themselves. An acupuncturist is not going to insert a needle into your spleen or your lungs. But strategic points on the body, when stimulated by the acupuncturist’s needle, will encourage healing energy to flow to the areas where the treatment is designed to heal.
The benefits of acupuncture in assisting with weight loss have been published in the Journal of Medical Acupuncture. A 2003 study found that three times more weight was lost by patients receiving acupuncture than in the control group that was not. In Australia, in the 1990s, the University of Adelaide reported that 95 percent of their study participants found themselves to have a reduced appetite than those that did not receive acupuncture.
If you lessen the amount of food you take in, you will lose weight. It’s a simple formula. If you struggle to reduce your caloric intake through will power alone, perhaps acupuncture treatments will bring you a sense of calm and healing, and give birth to a new, naturally healthy eater.

The diet and exercise portion of this weight lose formula is in your hands, but we do not recommend self acupuncture. If you are interested in acupuncture in the Maryland area, please contact the Acupuncture center of Baltimore for more information on Maryland acupuncture , or contact your local professional.

Let’s face it, running or jogging is not the easiestexercise out there. Fortunately, the caloric payoff is fantastic! It is one ofthe best ways to lose weight when paired with weightloss pills. Running burns more calories than any other exercise andwill help you lose weight and get in shape before you know it.

Since it is such a demanding sport, here are some of the luxuries that you deserve in your quest for heat-to-toe fitness.

Heart Rate Monitor

It’s hard to know exactly how hard you are or should be working when you’re out on the road. A lot of the time, you might just be worried about finishing without losing too much of your dignity. In order to track how hard you are working, a heart rate monitor is a fantastic way to know what shape your heart is in while you sweat.

GPS Watch

A lot of running and jogging comes down to your distance. Doyou try for one mile a day? Three? Five or more? Whatever your magic number, it can get a bit monotonous to run the same neighborhoods every workout, which makes a GPS watch the perfect solution for more adventurous runners.

If you want to run five miles but are looking for a different route, simply allow your watch to locate a satellite and head out on adventure for 2.5 miles. After that, just turn around and head home. You will have the satisfaction of seeing new sights while at the same knowing exactly how far you have gone.

Handheld Water Bottle

One major problem that runners face is getting enough water. It can be difficult to plan an exciting route around water stops, and most people don’t like to carry their water.

Until now, that is.

Handheld water bottles are a fantastic option for runners because they often are small enough to carry while at the same holding enough fluid to keep you hydrated.

Whatever gear you choose to hit the roads with, happy running!
